The gospel music industry has been thrown into deep mourning following the passing of Maame Tiwaa, the renowned backing vocalist who for decades formed the musical backbone of the legendary Yaw Sarpong & Asomafo group.
She died in the early hours of Sunday, December 7, 2025, after what family sources describe as a brief illness.
Maame Tiwaa’s contribution to Ghanaian gospel music is immeasurable. As the soft, soul-soothing female harmony behind Yaw Sarpong’s powerful lead vocals, she helped craft some of the most enduring gospel classics in the last three decades.
Songs such as “Wo Haw Ne Sen,” “Yen Fa Yesu Nkor,” and many others became timeless partly because of her unmistakable voice — a presence that brought balance, warmth, and spiritual depth to the group’s sound.
Her partnership with Yaw Sarpong dates back to the formative years of the Asomafo ministry.
At a time when gospel music was still carving its space within the evolving music landscape, Maame Tiwaa became one of the pioneering female voices shaping the genre.
Her calm stage presence, vocal discipline, and devotion to ministry made her one of the most respected female figures in gospel music, even though she often worked behind the scenes.
In recent years, her loyalty to Yaw Sarpong transcended music. When the celebrated gospel icon took ill and retreated from public performances, Maame Tiwaa stepped in not only as a colleague but as a caretaker.
Close associates reveal she played an active role in supporting him through his health challenges, accompanying him to appointments and reportedly staying close throughout his recovery journey.
Despite reducing her public appearances, Maame Tiwaa gave two memorable performances in 2025 — first at this year’s Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), where she honoured Yaw Sarpong with a moving tribute performance that earned a standing ovation, and later at her son’s wedding, where guests described her voice as still powerful and full of grace.
Her sudden passing has therefore left the gospel fraternity reeling. Musicians, pastors, industry stakeholders, and fans have taken to social media to express their grief, describing her as a “gentle soul,” “a vessel of worship,” and “the quiet strength behind one of Ghana’s greatest gospel ministries.”
Many recall her humility, her unwavering commitment to God’s work, and the comfort her voice brought to countless believers over the years.
