The fixture looked extremely difficult for Asante Kotoko because the Nsenkyire Sports Arena has not been a good ground for the top teams in Ghana since the Samraboi-based club gained promotion to the Ghana Premier League three seasons ago.
The defending champions won 1-0 at Dun’s Park last Monday in Bibiani against Nsoatreman, so they were meeting Asante Kotoko with immense confidence.
Asante Kotoko, on the other hand in mid-week, narrowly defeated Access Bank Division One League side Sekondi Eleven Wise in the MTN FA Cup round 16’s postponed fixture to book a place in the quarter-finals.
Samraboi nicely welcomed the Porcupine Warriors for the week 14 fixture.
Former Berekum Chelsea forward Awuah Dramani in the 34th minute, put the Timber Giants ahead. The game had been firmly poised before the opening goal. Samartex ended the half leading by a lone goal.
The second half promised to be a cagey affair as it was either win or bust for the Porcupine Warriors. Star striker who has exceeded expectations, Kwame Poku, earlier in the second half, levelled the score for Asante Kotoko. It was his 6th goal in the Ghana Premier League since joining the Kumasi-based club in the second transfer window of the season.
Asante Kotoko failed to snatch the winning goal just like the host. The draw is a poor result for the Porcupine Warriors, as a win for Hearts of Oak in the late kick-off will help the Phobians leapfrog the leaders.
In the other game of the afternoon, Young Apostles won 1-0 against the relegation-threatened Accra Lions. Husseine Isaah’s late goal helped Young Apostles snatch all three points to move to 10th position. Accra Lions remain bottom of the table having won just 16 points from 21 games.
