Bibiani Gold Stars was destroyed 5-0 under the Baba Yara Sports Stadium floodlight in Kumasi in March 2022. The disgrace is something Gold Stars have determined to never repeat against the Porcupine Warriors. Since that disappointment, Bibiani Gold Stars have closed the gap against Kotoko in Kumasi and were confident of a point on Friday night.

Heading into round 15 of the GPL, the Bibiani club was second on the log, with just a goal difference separating them from the leaders Heart of Lions. Asante Kotoko was fifth but just three points behind their opponents.

The fixture had promised to be competitive with former Asante Kotoko centre-back, Frimpong Manso, as the head coach of Bibiani Gold Stars, making it an exciting one. Kwame Poku was also expected to, make his long-awaited debut for Fabulous from the bench but Prosper Ogum surprisingly started him.

Heart of Lions had won on Thursday against Young Apostles so none of the two sides could afford to drop a point.

Skipper Justice Blay put the home side ahead from the spot kick in the 20th minute. The away side having been brilliant the entire season continued their fine display after having six shots with two on goal, compared to Kotoko’s five and three on goal in the first half.

The tie was put beyond Frimpong Manso’s side after Bright Boakye Kyere received his marching orders in the 37th minute. The 23-year-old former Tano Bofoakwa defender has been an integral part of Gold Stars’ defence but his dismissal was going to let his side down.

Bibiani Gold Stars with 10 men dominated possession in the second half after enjoying 52% to 11 men Kotoko’s 48%.

Kwame Poku who is expected to share the goalscoring duties with Albert Amoah scored in the 73rd minute to end Bibiani Gold Stars’ dream of coming back into the game. The game ended 2-0 with the Porcupine Warriors leapfrogging their opponents to second with just three points behind the leaders Heart of Lions.

Bibiani Gold Stars suffered their second defeat of the season as they dropped into third on the table.

The Porcupine Warriors next travel to Tarkwa to face Medeama while Gold Stars at Dun’s Park welcomes Berekum Chelsea.
