An English Premier League match involving Liverpool was briefly halted after a supporter directed racist abuse at Ghanaian international Antoine Semenyo, prompting swift action from stadium officials and police.
The shocking incident occurred during the second half of the game when Semenyo, who plays as a forward for AFC Bournemouth and the Black Stars, was subjected to vile chants from a wheelchair-bound fan seated in the home section.
According to eyewitnesses, the referee paused the game after players alerted match officials to the racist slurs being hurled at Semenyo.
Stewards and police quickly intervened, ejecting the individual from the stands to loud boos from other spectators.
The suspect was immediately handed over to Merseyside Police for questioning.
Both sets of players and officials gathered in solidarity, with several of Semenyo’s teammates seen consoling him before play resumed.
Club and FA Condemn Incident
Liverpool Football Club released a statement shortly after the match, confirming that the fan had been identified and detained.
The club reiterated its “zero tolerance” policy towards racism, vowing to cooperate fully with police to ensure that the supporter faces the maximum legal and sporting sanctions.
“The individual responsible for this appalling behaviour will never set foot inside Anfield again,” the statement read.
“Liverpool FC stands firmly against all forms of discrimination and will always protect players, officials, and supporters from racist abuse.”
