FIFA announced on Monday that they have deducted three points from South Africa after it unbelievably fielded an unqualified player against Lesotho in March 2025.

Bafana Bafana was three points ahead of Benin and were in a comfortable lead in Group C of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, but now must win all games and hope results elsewhere go their way to qualify automatically to the World Cup.

Head coach Hugo Broos has advised his coaching staff, SAFA and Mokoena for the carelessness that has put them in a tight corner to stop the blame game.

“People have to stop now to look for who is responsible; we all know he made a mistake. But between the first match and the second, there were 16 months; we also played AFCON”, Broos said

“Who is responsible? My staff is responsible, the coaching staff is responsible, the player is responsible, and SAFA administration is responsible”, he added.

South Africa will travel to Zimbabwe and host Rwanda in weeks 9 and 10, respectively, in their final two games of the qualifiers.
