A househelp, Zakaria Amina, is serving 36 months in prison after her sentence was reportedly and mysteriously altered from an original six months.
According to Ulysses Amoako, who describes himself as a father figure to Amina, she was convicted of theft after admitting to taking some dollar notes she said she found wrapped in an envelope inside a bin while sweeping at a house in Adentan, where she worked as a househelp.
Speaking to Crime Check, Mr Amoako said Amina returned the rest of the money and kept it in the house, but when her employers, a couple, confronted her, she showed them where she had kept it, and they claimed they could not find it.
He said Amina admitted to depositing some of the money in her bank account and was made to withdraw and hand it over, but was still asked to produce the remaining amount that the couple insisted was missing.
Mr Amoako further alleged that before the incident, the husband had made sexual advances toward Amina, which she rejected, and claimed the man had threatened to “teach her a lesson” afterwards. Amina was subsequently handed over to police and prosecuted.
According to Mr Amoako, the judge sentenced Amina to six months in prison, but by the time she arrived at the facility, the sentence had somehow been changed to 36 months.
With his help, Amina approached the court clerk seeking answers, but was told nothing could be done to correct it. Amina has now served one year of the sentence and is appealing for help to have the remaining term reversed.
