It was Manchester United’s fourth defeat of the season when they lost 2-0 in Spain against Atletico Madrid. Goals from Pablo Barrios in the first minute and Ademola Lookman in the 79th minute ensured a sweet night for Diego Simeone and his lads.

On the other hand, it was deja vu for Michael Carrick after his side failed to show that they belong to the elite table.

Manchester United have been looking completely lost in their last five games after recording three defeats and two draws, prompting Argentine defender Lisandro Martinez to attack the club’s leadership. The 29-year-old former Ajax defender was not happy after the game when speaking to former Red Devils goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel.

“I have to control myself a lot… but sometimes it is a reflection or the mirror of our club,” the United defender said.

“We had a fantastic season last season, and now we expect more from the top. More players to compete because many, many teams bring many players, and in this game Atlético has an amazing team. And they deserved to win.”

When asked about United’s recruitment, he said: “I expect more quality. Yes, 100 per cent. I expect more from our technical director, and also as players we have to do more, but it is important when you make a strong squad for these types of nights.

“In general, last season we did everything. We created a base to be an amazing team, but this is sometimes… to prove something it is annoying, disappointing coming here and not getting an amazing result.”

Fans and pundits are divided now concerning the defender’s comments after the game, with half calling him brave and the other half calling him unprofessional.

Michael Carrick is in a deep mess as his side travel to Leeds on Sunday afternoon and Como on Wednesday afternoon. These two results will make or break him, as his role is under scrutiny.
