Mali transitional leader, General Assimi Goïta, has officially assumed the role of Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs as of May 4, 2026.

This move, announced via a presidential decree on state television, allows Goïta to maintain his position as president while taking direct control of the country’s military apparatus.

To support this new mandate, he has appointed General Oumar Diarra, the former army chief of staff, as minister delegate for defence.

The appointment follows the death of the previous defence minister, General Sadio Camara, who was killed on April 25, 2026.

Camara died in a coordinated suicide truck bombing that targeted his residence in the garrison town of Kati, located near the capital, Bamako.

The attack also reportedly claimed the lives of his second wife and two granddaughters, marking a significant personal and political blow to the junta.

This consolidation of power comes during a period of escalating violence, as al-Qaeda-linked militants (JNIM) and Tuareg separatist forces (FLA) have launched simultaneous, large-scale raids across the country.

These groups recently claimed to have captured strategic northern locations, including the town of Kidal.

By taking direct control of the defence portfolio, Goïta aims to tighten his grip on security operations as Mali continues to distance itself from former Western allies in favour of military cooperation with Russia.
