South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns have been crowned CAF Champions League winners for the 2025/26 season, claiming a 2-1 aggregate victory over Morocco’s AS FAR Rabat.
The Brazilians held their nerve in a hostile atmosphere at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, with the second leg ending 1-1, while their 1-0 first leg win at home proved to be the decisive advantage.
That crucial first-leg goal came from a stunning free-kick by Aubrey Modiba in Pretoria, setting the tone for what would become a historic continental triumph.
In the second leg, AS FAR were awarded a penalty after a foul in the box, with captain Mohamed Rabie Hrimat converting to put the hosts ahead.
But Sundowns showed their fighting spirit, and Teboho Mokoena delivered a moment of brilliance — thumping home a half-volley via the underside of the crossbar on the cusp of half-time, a priceless away goal that put Sundowns back in front on aggregate at 2-1.
The second half was tense, with Sundowns digging deep defensively to hold on and seal glory.
The victory makes Sundowns the most successful South African club in the CAF Champions League, claiming their second continental title.
Subdowns will take home a whopping $6 million prize and have earned qualification to the 2026 FIFA Intercontinental Cup and the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup.
It is a sweet redemption for the club, having suffered defeat in the previous year’s final, with Masandawana now rightfully claiming their throne as the Kings of Africa.
