A 21-year-old Austrian man, identified by local media as Beran Aliji, pleaded guilty on Wednesday, April 28, 2026, to charges of plotting a jihadist attack on a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna.

The defendant admitted to being a member of a terrorist organisation and preparing explosives as his trial opened in Wiener Neustadt.

Authorities revealed that he had radicalised online, sworn an oath of allegiance to the Islamic State, and successfully fabricated a shrapnel bomb using instructions found on the internet.

The plot, which was thwarted in August 2024 following a tip-off from the CIA, forced the cancellation of three sold-out “Eras Tour” shows at Ernst Happel Stadium.

Prosecutors detailed a chilling plan where the suspect intended to drive a car into crowds gathered outside the venue—up to 30,000 fans each night—before attacking survivors with knives and homemade explosives to kill as many people as possible.

Intelligence suggests the attack was nearly advanced enough to leave what the Austrian chancellor described as “a trail of blood”.

During the trial, the suspect faced additional allegations regarding a broader extremist cell that had considered simultaneous attacks in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates.

While he pleaded guilty to the Vienna concert plot, his defence attorney noted that he denied some separate charges. If convicted on the terrorism-related offences, Aliji faces a sentence of up to 20 years in prison.
