It was a win-or-bust for both clubs in Bilbao on Wednesday night in the finals of the UEFA Europa League. Both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have endured a very horrible season, and whoever wins the Europa League was going to have the better over the other.

Welsh international Brenan Johnson’s first-half strike separated the teams as the London-based club Tottenham Hotspur defeated Manchester United 1-0 to end an unbelievable 17-year trophy drought.

Ruben Amorim, manager of Manchester United, was heavily blamed for his selection for the game as fans believe it let them down. With immense pressure on him, he assured fans that he could help the club return to their glory days.

“I’m not worried about that, I can live the next day,” Amorim said when he was asked about his future. “I have realised so much in my confidence that I can do the job,” he added.

“In this moment, I am not going to be here defending myself. It is not my style. In this moment, it is a little bit of faith [needed].

“I am not going to talk about the future. Tonight, we need to deal with the pain of losing this match. It was clear we were the better team, then we managed not to score again. The guys try everything to win the game. In the future, we can assess.

“I was always really honest with you. We were not perfect today, but we were better than our opponents. There are days when we have been really poor, but today was not the day,” Amorim concluded.

The under-fire young Portuguese manager has the backing of the club hierarchy, and they expect to give him enough dough for the imminent transfer window.
