The Italian Serie A went down to the wire as expected when the league reached week 30. Napoli, Inter and Atalanta were fighting for the title, but Atalanta, along the way, failed to keep up with the pace.
It became a two-horse race as Napoli and Inter were the two sides battling to win it. Antonio Conte’s Napoli were the favourites because they had won Serie A compared to Inter Milan, who were chasing the treble.
On the final day of the season, Napoli needed any kind of win over already-saved Cagliari Calcio. Inter at Como also needed a win and hoped for Napoli to falter by losing or drawing.
De Vrij headed Inter Milan in front from Calhanoglu’s corner kick in the 20th minute. Inter zoomed to the top because Napoli were drawing goalless at home to Cagliari.
Napoli’s lucky charm, Scott McTominay, headed in Politano’s cross to give Napoli a deserved lead in the 42nd minute to send the Maradona into a delirium.
Como’s veteran goalkeeper Pepe Reina was red-carded in the 45th minute after tripping Taremi. Inter Milan was extremely optimistic they were going to finish Como with one eye on the Maradona.
Both teams were leading 1-0 at halftime.
Interestingly, the two sides scored their second goals in the 51st minute. Romelu Lukaku made light work of Cagliari’s defence when he picked up the ball in the centre and powerfully ran over two Cagliari defenders to calmly finish the beautiful job he did.
Taremi assisted Joaquim Correa to double Inter’s lead at Como. Both teams ended the night with 2-0 victories, but Napoli lifted the title for the 4th time in their entire history.
Antonio Conte became the first coach to win Serie A with three different clubs. Former Manchester United midfielder McTominay was voted as the Most Valuable Player of the Season in Italy after unbelievable performances.
