Oklahoma City Thunder did not waste time in renewing the contract of their superstar  Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who played a very key role in their triumph in the 2024-25 NBA season for the first time since relocating to Oklahoma in 2008.

The 26 year old had 2 years left on his current $79 million contract with the champions and has agreed a 6 year renewal making him have the richest annual salary in the history of the NBA.

The Oklahoma City Thunder star inked a $285m super-max extension that will keep him with the team through 2030-31.

Shai will now be paid an average annual salary of $71.25m per year, which has been bettered by only three other sportsmen – Canelo Alvarez, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The NBA is home to bumper deals in sports, and many financial experts in sports expect the league to soon rival the others. OKC intends to defend their NBA title next season and has started the title defence with the renewal of Shai’s contract to fend off approache from rival teams.

The former LA Clippers star who joined OKC in 2019 is a three-time NBA All-Star, a three-time All-NBA First Team Member, and was named the NBA Most Valuable Player for the 2024-25 Season; season.
