Celebrations in Manhattan turned violent after the New York Knicks’ historic NBA championship victory, as a teenager was shot and several buses were torched in the aftermath.

Police confirmed that the shooting occurred near a crowded intersection where jubilant fans had gathered, leaving the victim in critical condition.

The incident cast a shadow over what had been a night of long-awaited triumph for the Knicks, who secured their first title in decades.

Authorities reported that multiple city buses were set ablaze during the unrest, forcing emergency services to intervene quickly to contain the fires and restore order.

Witnesses described chaotic scenes, with crowds spilling into the streets, fireworks being set off, and clashes erupting between groups of revellers.

The destruction left parts of Manhattan littered with debris, while transit officials warned of significant disruptions to public transport.

City leaders condemned the violence, urging fans to celebrate responsibly and respect public safety.

While the Knicks’ victory was a historic moment for New York basketball, the night’s events highlighted the challenges of managing large-scale celebrations in the city.

Police have launched investigations into both the shooting and the arson attacks, vowing to bring those responsible to justice.

New York Knicks end 52-year wait

The New York Knicks ended a 52-year NBA title drought stunningly, claiming the 2026 championship with a 4-1 Finals victory over the San Antonio Spurs.

As the third seed, the Knicks navigated a gruelling playoff run — defeating Atlanta in six games, sweeping Philadelphia, sweeping Cleveland in the Eastern Conference Finals, then edging out a dangerous Spurs side that had eliminated Oklahoma City, the defending champions, in the West.

The decisive Game 5 was played on Saturday night in San Antonio, where the Knicks sealed glory with a 94-90 victory in a feisty fashion.
