The political temperature in Parliament surged this week amid allegations by Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) is orchestrating a strategy to secure an overwhelming parliamentary majority to push through constitutional amendments.

The allegations surfaced following a tense session on Tuesday, December 9, when Minority MPs blocked Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga from addressing calls to withdraw a letter declaring the Kpandai parliamentary seat vacant.

The proceedings were disrupted after Minority MPs, clad in black, banged tables, chanted slogans, and forced a temporary suspension of parliamentary business.

The controversy traces back to a December 4 letter from the Clerk of Parliament to Electoral Commission Chairperson Jean Mensa, notifying her of the vacancy of the Kpandai seat following a High Court ruling.

The Minority MPs immediately criticized the communication, labeling it “unfortunate” and a violation of the rule of law.

They argued that it undermined parliamentary procedures and posed a threat to democratic norms.

Addressing journalists in Parliament, Oppong Nkrumah drew historical parallels with previous high-profile removals in the public service.

He recalled the removal of the Chief Justice prior to the NDC assuming office, which he described as part of a “pre-advertised agenda” executed under procedural pretenses.

According to Oppong Nkrumah, a similar blueprint is now being applied to the Electoral Commission, aimed at reshaping its composition.

“There is a pre-advertised agenda to get rid of the EC commissioner and her deputies. It is being rolled out and they will say it is procedure, procedure. We are telling you if you still don’t believe it, that there is a pre-advertised agenda to ensure that there is an overwhelming majority in this chamber for the purpose of constitutional amendments,” the Ofoase Ayirebi asserted.

The MP emphasized that Minority MPs are prepared to resist any attempts to pressure Speaker Alban Bagbin into declaring the Kpandai seat vacant, noting that the Speaker has already made a ruling on the matter.

“No amount of pressure should be brought on him to make that declaration,” Oppong Nkrumah stressed.
