Workers of the National Identification Authority (NIA) under the Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU) have announced an indefinite nationwide strike beginning Wednesday, May 13, 2026, over unresolved concerns regarding their conditions of service.

The industrial action was declared by the NIA Division of the union following what it described as a unanimous decision by its Divisional Executive Council after the expiration of a seven-day notice earlier issued by the mother union.

According to a directive released by the union leadership, all members of the NIA across the country have been instructed to fully comply with the strike action until their concerns are addressed by authorities.

“On Wednesday, May 13, 2026, no member shall report to work. You will rise from your beds and return to them, until further notice, and until our just demands are met,” portions of the statement read.

Ahead of the strike, workers have also been directed to report to work on Monday, May 11 and Tuesday, May 12 wearing red attire or red armbands as a sign of solidarity and protest over their grievances.

The union emphasized that the strike would continue indefinitely until government and relevant stakeholders respond adequately to their demands.

“Let there be no misunderstanding: this strike will remain in force until our collective voice is heard and our conditions are addressed,” the statement further noted.

Regional officers of the union have meanwhile been tasked to ensure strict compliance and enforcement of the directive across all NIA offices nationwide.

The statement, jointly signed by Assistant Divisional Secretary Godsway Ayivor Bismark and Divisional Chairman Francis Bangfudem Nyuzaghl, called on members to remain united throughout the industrial action.

“Our resolve is our weapon; our solidarity is our shield. Only through unwavering unity will we make this struggle a success,” the union declared.

The impending strike is expected to significantly disrupt operations at NIA offices across the country, including Ghana Card registration, card replacement, data updates and other identification-related services widely accessed by the public.

The National Identification Authority has in recent years played a central role in the digital identification system, with the Ghana Card becoming a mandatory requirement for banking transactions, SIM registration, passport acquisition, healthcare services and access to several public services.

The latest development is likely to increase pressure on government and labour authorities to engage the union in negotiations before the planned strike date in order to avoid prolonged disruption of essential public services.
