Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo has died at the age of 40 following a private battle with advanced metastatic kidney cancer.
His family confirmed the tragic news in a statement on his official Instagram page, noting that he passed away on Monday, May 11, 2026, at Evercare Hospital in Lagos.
The award-winning star had reportedly been managing his illness away from the public eye, leading to a long absence from social media that had sparked concern among fans since late 2024.
Known for his charismatic screen presence, Ekubo first rose to national prominence as the first runner-up in the 2010 Mr Nigeria contest.
He subsequently built a prolific career with major roles in films such as Weekend Getaway, for which he won Best Supporting Actor at the 2013 Best of Nollywood Awards, and Yemi Alade’s viral Johnny music video.
Beyond acting, the University of Calabar law graduate was recognised by the United Nations in 2020 as one of the Most Influential People of African Descent under 40.
Tributes have poured in from colleagues and fans worldwide, with figures like Funke Akindele and Rita Dominic expressing their shock and grief online.
His family’s statement described him as a beloved husband, son, and brother who faced his health challenges with “unwavering faith and enduring hope”.
While the industry mourns the loss of one of its most recognisable faces, his family has requested privacy and prayers during this difficult time.
