Authorities in the Northern Region have detained three individuals for possessing prohibited pharmaceutical drugs and an unlicensed firearm during a nighttime operation near Diare, located just outside Savelugu.

The arrests occurred on Sunday, August 3, at a standard checkpoint on the Tamale to Bolgatanga highway.

The suspects, driving a Nissan Hardbody pickup, were instructed by police to pull over but chose to flee instead. The individual driving the vehicle was later recognised as Jabuni S.

Mohammed drove quickly past the checkpoint, which led to a brief pursuit. He eventually left the vehicle and tried to run into the bushes, but he was quickly caught by the officers who were following him.

During the inspection of the vehicle, police found a deflated spare tire containing 1,399 blister packs of Tafrodol 120mg, which is a regulated pain medication.

A closer examination showed that there was a loaded pistol concealed in the headrest of the pickup truck.

Two additional individuals, Alidu Abdul Samed and Abdul Aziz, who were thought to be heading to meet Jabuni, were subsequently arrested while riding an unregistered motorcycle and taken into custody.

All three suspects are being held and will be charged after the investigations are finished.

Police say investigations are ongoing to determine the final destination and intended use of both the drugs and the firearm.

The Northern Regional Police Command has assured the public of its continued commitment to intercepting illicit drug trafficking and the illegal movement of arms across the region.
