A 35-year-old nursing mother and seamstress has been arrested by the Bole District Police for allegedly assaulting a five-year-old girl in her care at Bole Mempeasem, a suburb of Bole in the Savannah Region.
The disturbing incident came to light on the evening of Wednesday, May 20, 2026, when the Assembly Member for the Mempeasem Electoral Area, Hassan Abu, Peace Brother, discovered the injured child behind his house. The girl, who could only identify her mother as “mama,” was later traced to her guardian.
According to the Assemblyman, residents had warned that the woman frequently abused the child. He confronted her and pleaded with her not to harm the girl. However, by the following morning, he received a distress call that the child had been beaten overnight, sustaining blade wounds before being sent to school. Alarmed, he rushed to the school and immediately alerted the police and social welfare authorities.
The suspect, identified as Marijana Alhassan, was subsequently arrested. Speaking at the Bole District Police Station in Waala, she denied inflicting blade wounds on the child. She explained that the victim is her husband’s sister’s daughter, who stays with her family whenever the mother goes on study leave.
Alhassan described the child as highly dependent, claiming she struggled with basic tasks such as eating, undressing, and using the toilet. She admitted pushing the child away in frustration but insisted the injuries were accidental, alleging the girl fell onto a mopping stick. She said she dressed the child afterwards and sent her to school, only to be summoned by school authorities and arrested upon arrival.
The case has since been referred to the police and social welfare services for further investigation.
