When Pogba in September 2023 after testing positive for dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), a substance football’s anti-doping organisation has banned due to it raising testosterone, he was banned for 4 years but later reduced to 2, making him eligible to return to action in March 2025. Juventus cancelled his contract, fearing he was not returning anytime soon.
Many asked Pogba why he was weeping during the signing of his two-year deal with French side AS Monaco.
“I realised how empty and meaningless it was when I was banned from football for 4 years. Immediately, I stopped being Pogba, the rich, famous player, people started avoiding me”, he said. The French midfielder was one of the famous footballers when he was active, as he was also a model for most of the top fashion brands. He lost everything the moment his ban was announced.
“The worst thing which still breaks my heart today was that even my wife abandoned me. Everyone who used to invite me to their fashion events and stuff like that said: Pogba is of no use now”, the midfielder emotionally disclosed. Zulay Pogba, Paul’s wife, was much in love with the footballer but decided to distance herself from him when things started going awry.
“That was a good sit back for me to see my true friends. And my wife proved she never loved me. But I’m very happy now because my phone doesn’t ring with fake friends again. I now know I’m on my own in life,” the 32-year-old 2018 World Cup winner said.
Pogba has played for Manchester United and Juventus and has represented the French national team 91 times.
