It is exactly 24 years since Ghana lost 127 souls at the Accra Sports Stadium when the two giants of Ghana football, Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, clashed.
The disaster has lived in the memories of football fans in Ghana since then and it has become a norm for football stakeholders across the country to show respect to the souls that perished every May 9th.
2025’s edition was graced by the Ghana Football Association president, Kurt Okraku, the Sports Minister Kofi Adams, members of the GFA Executive Council, representatives from Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, the Director-General of the National Sports Authority, and family members of victims of the May 9 Disaster.
Kurt Okraku during the commemoration of the 24th anniversary of the May 9th Stadium Disaster at the Accra Sports Stadium, told Ghanaians to make sure that football should be a unifying force and must behave well to ensure sanity at football grounds.
Concerning the cruel assassination of Pooley by a yet-to-be-identified perpetrator, the FA president implored Ghana Police to act fast in their search for the killers for justice to prevail.
“The loss of Pooley is a painful reminder that we still have work to do in protecting the lives of supporters and preserving the sanctity of the game,” said Mr Okraku.
“I strongly urge the Ghana Police Service to pursue justice swiftly and ensure those responsible for his untimely death are held accountable,” Kurt said.
Hooliganism is still yet to be cured in Ghana football as it remains one of the biggest problems in the domestic game.
