President John Dramani Mahama will depart Accra on Sunday, March 1, for Arusha, Tanzania, where he is scheduled to open the 2026 judicial year of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

The President will attend the ceremony on Monday, March 2, as Special Guest of Honour. The occasion marks a significant milestone, as he becomes the first sitting Ghanaian President to be invited to address the continental court.

The event will also launch activities commemorating the court’s 20th anniversary, under the theme: “20 Years of Service in Protecting Human and Peoples’ Rights in Africa.”

While in Tanzania, President Mahama is expected to hold bilateral talks with Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, with discussions aimed at strengthening diplomatic relations and enhancing cooperation between Ghana and Tanzania.

The President is scheduled to return to Ghana after the ceremony on Monday. In line with Article 60(8) of the Constitution, the Vice President will act in his absence.

Based in Arusha, the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights serves as the judicial arm of the African Union’s human rights system, mandated to safeguard human and peoples’ rights across the continent.
