Pressure is intensifying on Otto Addo after a string of disappointing results has cast doubt over Ghana’s readiness for the 2026 World Cup.
The Ghana national football team have endured a difficult friendlies, suffering defeats to Japan and South Korea before a heavy 5-1 loss to Austria national football team in Vienna.
Those results are particularly concerning as all three opponents are World Cup-bound sides, offering a stark measure of the level Ghana will face when the tournament begins later this year.
Across the matches, familiar problems have emerged, including defensive lapses, a lack of cohesion and an inability to compete consistently against high-quality opposition. The performances have raised fresh concerns ahead of a challenging group-stage draw that includes Panama, Croatia and England.
In an effort to strengthen the technical bench, the Ghana Football Association recently added Desmond Ofei, Alain Ravera and Kim Lars Bjorkegren as assistant coaches, alongside psychologist Kris Perquy and performance analyst Jose Daniel Martinez Alonso. However, the changes have yet to translate into improved results on the pitch.
Addo, who successfully guided Ghana to World Cup qualification, is now under increasing scrutiny, with questions being asked about his ability to lead the team against elite opposition.
Attention now turns to Monday’s high-profile friendly against Germany national football team. Another setback could deepen the pressure, while a strong response may help restore belief as Ghana continue their preparations for the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
