After 9 successful years, 48-year-old Aliou Cisse has brough to an end his marriage with the Senegalese national team.

The news is a bit shocking because no one saw it coming.

The Federation Senegalaise de Football (FSF) decided to not continue with the former skipper after his contract expired, per multiple sources from Dakar.

Cisse was not sacked, but the Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture of Senegal, Ms. Khady Diéne GAYE, decided not to continue the union anymore.

Reasons why Aliou Cissé is no longer Senegal’s head coach

• he failed to win the 2023 AFCON

• he failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup quarterfinals

• Senegal feels regression on FIFA World Cup rankings

• risk of disaffection between the national team and football lovers in Senegal

Risk of missing the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Aliou Cisse won the 2021 AFCON for the first time in their history. Senegal qualified to the 2018 and 2022 World Cups in Russia and Qatar respectively via his leadership.

The West African nation’s highest ever FIFA rankings (17) was achieved in February to April 2024 through Cisse’s leadership.

Senegal has been doing alright lately although they are in a period of transition. The last time Lions of Teranga lost a game was in September 2023 when Algeria won 1-0 in a friendly. Senegal exited in the round 16 of the 2023 AFCON on penalties against the host and eventual winners, Ivory Coast.

The team in the last international break struggled against Burkina Faso and Burundi in the 2025 AFCON Qualifiers forcing many fans to bitterly complain.

Ir remains unknown who is earmarked to to replace him even though Herve Renard’s name has been mentioned.

Cisse was the longest serving head coach of any African side currently.
