Police have launched a manhunt for six inmates who escaped from the Konongo Divisional Police cells in the Ashanti Region in the early hours of Tuesday.

A police source said the detainees reportedly used dawn prayers as a cover while preparing to break out, giving officers little indication of their intentions.

The source confirmed that all six inmates had escaped, prompting efforts to track them down and establish how they managed to leave the facility.

Details surrounding the escape remain unclear, including how the detainees got out of the cells and whether any security lapses contributed to the incident.

Police have not yet disclosed the identities of the escapees or the offences for which they were being held. It is also unclear whether any of them have been recaptured.

Investigations are ongoing to reconstruct the events leading to the breakout and determine the circumstances under which the inmates escaped.

The incident has renewed concerns about security at police holding cells, particularly at divisional commands outside Ghana’s major urban centres.

Authorities are expected to establish how the escape occurred as the search for the six detainees continues.
