Ghanaian teenage sprinter, Sulemana Fulera, has advanced to the final of the Women’s 200m event at the first-ever African School Games taking place in Algeria.

The promising athlete clocked a time of 25.25 seconds in Heat 2 of the semi-finals, finishing second and thereby securing an automatic qualification for the final race of the highly competitive event.

The African School Games, launched in 2025, represent the continent’s first dedicated multi-sport platform exclusively for secondary school athletes.

Designed to unearth and nurture Africa’s next generation of elite sports talents, the competition brings together young athletes from various countries to compete in disciplines ranging from athletics to team sports.

Fulera’s qualification is a significant milestone for Ghana, whose athletics delegation has shown determination in a field stacked with emerging talents.

Her performance not only highlights her individual potential but also adds momentum to Ghana’s overall campaign at the inaugural continental event.

A product of Ghana’s growing youth athletics scene, Sulemana Fulera has been making steady progress on the local and regional circuits.

Her advancement to the final is seen by coaches and observers as a natural step in her development, with many touting her as one of the nation’s future prospects in women’s sprinting.

Her qualification comes at a time when Ghana is increasingly asserting itself in sprint events.

Just days ago, fellow sprinter Edwin Gadayi clinched a bronze medal in the Men’s 200m final at the AFN National Trials in Nigeria with a commendable time of 20.85 seconds.

Similarly, Ghana’s Men’s 4x100m relay team also picked up bronze at the same event with a time of 41.09 seconds, signaling a resurgence of sprinting talent within the country.

As the athletics segment of the African School Games continues, expectations are now squarely on Fulera as she prepares to compete for a podium finish in the 200m final.

With her consistency and calm execution on the track, she has emerged as a strong medal contender in a field teeming with equally driven young runners.

The final promises to be fiercely contested, but for Ghana, Sulemana Fulera has already marked a historic stride — one that could inspire a new wave of school-based athletics talent across the nation.
