Accra is buzzing with excitement following the official launch of the 2026 International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Africa Youth Championship, an event that will see Ghana welcome the continent’s finest young paddlers for a week of high-octane competition.
The launch ceremony, held in the capital, formally opened preparations for what organisers are describing as a historic edition of the championship.
A record 22 countries have registered to participate, making it one of the largest gatherings in the tournament’s history. Approximately 300 athletes are expected to converge on Accra to compete across various youth categories, transforming the city into a hub of table tennis excellence for the duration of the event.
Competition will be staged across a wide range of categories from the 20 registered professional table tennis associations across the continent, giving athletes at different age levels the chance to shine.
These include U19 and U15 Singles for both men and women, U19 and U15 Doubles in men’s, women’s, and mixed formats, as well as U19 and U15 Team events for men and women.
This broad structure ensures the championship caters to a full spectrum of young talent, from doubles partnerships to full national team showdowns.
Team Ghana will fly the host nation’s flag, going head-to-head with some of Africa’s most promising young talents in what promises to be a fiercely competitive outing.
Organisers have billed the tournament as nothing short of a festival — a true buffet of table tennis, showcasing the depth and diversity of the sport across the continent.
Beyond the medals and rankings, the championship carries a deeper purpose. It has been organised primarily as a platform for talent identification and development, giving federations across Africa the opportunity to spot and nurture the next generation of table tennis stars who could go on to represent their countries on bigger stages.
Ahead of the main competition, journalists have been invited to be part of the preparatory activities scheduled for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, offering the media a behind-the-scenes look at the buildup before action gets underway.
The tournament proper will kick off on Monday at the Borteyman Sports Complex, running from 20 to 27 July 2026, with all signs pointing to an unforgettable week of table tennis in Accra.
