Africa’s 4th-longest-serving leader, Yoweri Museveni, has announced his intentions to run for a 7th term as the president of Uganda. The 80-year-old first became president in 1986 and has no plans to stop ruling the nation even at the age of 80.

Presidential and legislative elections will be conducted in January 2026 across the East African nation, Uganda, and the opposition parties and leaders are extremely worried about Museveni’s love for power.

The Uganda Electoral Commission has 26 registered political parties, but only one has ruled for nearly 40 years. The National Resistance Movement (NRM) led by Museveni has faced much and fierce challenges from other strong opposition parties like the National Unity Platform and Forum for Democratic Change, but has all failed to topple NRM.

Equatorial Guinea’s Teodore Obiang Nguema Mbasogo has ruled the country since 1979, making him the longest-serving leader on the African continent.

Paul Biya of Cameroon came to power in 1982 and has still been ruling Cameroon, making him the second-longest-serving president in Africa.

DR Congo’s Denis Sassou-Nguesso ruled between 1979-1992 and returned in 1997, making him the third longest serving African president.

Museveni will reach 40 years in the Ugandan presidency in 2026, and if he wins for the 7th term, he will at least rule for 44 years.
