King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the Omukama of Tooro and once the world’s youngest reigning monarch, has died at the age of 34.
The prime minister of his kingdom announced his death, which occurred around 10:00 p.m. local time on Thursday, though no cause was given.
Born on 16 April 1992, he had ascended the throne in 1995 as the 13th ruler of the 180-year-old Kingdom of Tooro, becoming the youngest reigning monarch in the world at just three years old, following the death of his father.
Tooro is one of several traditional kingdoms in Uganda that survive alongside the country’s republican government. While Uganda is ruled by an elected head of state, these kingdoms preside over their territories much as they did in the pre-colonial period; their political power is largely symbolic, but they carry significant cultural and social weight.
Traditional monarchies were banned after Uganda’s independence in 1962 and later restored by President Yoweri Museveni in 1993, two years before King Oyo’s coronation.
He studied at the University of Winchester in the United Kingdom and championed initiatives in youth development, HIV prevention, environmental protection, tourism, and climate action during his reign.
His death drew an immediate outpouring of grief across Uganda. Opposition leader Bobi Wine wrote on social media that it was devastating news and prayed for the king’s soul to rest in eternal peace.
The Tooro prime minister confirmed that succession is secured, as the king is survived by a crown prince whose identity will be disclosed according to the kingdom’s traditions and customs.
