In the wake of Wednesday’s devastating military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight prominent Ghanaian officials, Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has led a high-powered delegation to officially inform and console the bereaved families.

The crash, which has shaken the nation, involved several top government officials, including Ministers and national security personnel, and occurred during a routine official assignment.

Among the victims were Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence; Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovations; and Alhaji Minuru Mohammed Limuna, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator.

On Wednesday evening, the Vice President personally visited the family homes of Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed and Alhaji Minuru Limuna.

Accompanied by senior members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Ghana Armed Forces’ high command, she formally delivered the heartbreaking news and offered the government’s condolences.

Simultaneously, another team led by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah and NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah traveled to Koforidua to deliver the news to the mother and extended family of Dr. Edward Omane Boamah.

The visit was marked by solemn prayers and traditional expressions of grief.

In addition, two separate teams were dispatched to the Western Region to reach the families of the helicopter crew members in Takoradi.

Among those who lost their lives are NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong and Samuel Aboagye, Deputy Director General of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

The teams visited the families of the fallen military crew, who were praised for their service and bravery.

This show of coordinated national empathy comes just hours after the crash, as the nation continues to mourn the tragic loss.

President John Dramani Mahama had earlier suspended all official engagements for the rest of the week, describing the incident as a “national tragedy.”

The Ghana Armed Forces, together with civil aviation and national security agencies, have launched a full investigation into the cause of the crash.

Meanwhile, flags are flying at half-mast across government institutions, and tributes continue to pour in from across the political spectrum and the general public.
