Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has been sacked by the struggling Championship side Plymouth.

The 39-year-old was appointed the manager of the club in the 2024 summer. He was just tasked to keep the club in the league but how things are going, Plymouth might end up in League One in the 2025-26 season.

On Tuesday morning, the club announced that they had decided to go their separate ways after a series of poor results.

In a statement, Rooney said: “Thanks also to all the staff who made me feel welcome and who make the club such a special place, the players and fans for their efforts and support during my time as head coach and I wish them all the best for the future.

“To the Green Army, thanks for making the games at Home Park so special, they are memories that we will share forever.”

The former England captain has in a few years managed Derby County, DC United, Birmingham City and Plymouth but they have all ended in disaster.

Plymouth has won two of their last 15 games. The club is languishing at the bottom of the table after winning just four of the 23 Championship games played so far. Of the possible 69 points, Plymouth won only 18.
