Ghanaian referees have been suffering in terms of wages. The Ghana Football Association owing referees has become something normal. It is always in the news that referees across the various divisions of Ghanaian football are owed making referees complain of delayed payments.
Per GFA communication director Henry Twum Asante on AKOMA FM, referees are owed from week 6 to week 14 of the current season.
“Normally, we owe referees, CAF, WAFU and FIFA, all owe referees at times, but the current situation is not the same as it was previously,” Henry said.
“We agreed to pay them every five weeks, and as we speak, the GPL referees have received weeks 1 to 5 allowances, the rest of the weeks will be paid very soon,” he added.
According to an agreement signed between the GFA and the referees, after every 5 matches, referees will be paid and it is only weeks one to five that the referees have been paid. Weeks 6 to 10 and 11 to 15 have not been paid.
Ghanaian referees have always been under huge criticism and immense scrutiny for poor performances since the beginning of the 21st century so the GFA must work extra harder to pay them on time.
