VfL Wolfsburg have confirmed the termination of Christian Eriksen’s contract by mutual consent, drawing the curtain on the Danish midfielder’s time at the club just over three months after he suffered a frightening on-pitch collapse.
The 34-year-old’s deal had originally been set to run until the summer of 2027, but Wolfsburg agreed to end it with immediate effect at Eriksen’s own request.
He has not featured for the club since June, when he collapsed during a friendly for Denmark against Ukraine — the second such episode of his career.
He regained consciousness shortly afterwards after his implanted cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) delivered a shock to restore his heart rhythm.
Wolfsburg’s sporting director, Dieter Hecking, said the decision on Eriksen’s future had to rest with the player himself.
“We wanted to give him that freedom in this particular situation and have now agreed to his request to terminate the contract,” Hecking said, adding that despite his brief stay, Eriksen had left a lasting impression on teammates, staff and fans alike.
Eriksen, who joined Wolfsburg as a free agent in September 2025, said being close to his family in Denmark was now his priority.
“At the moment, it is important for me to be close to my family in Denmark. I’m pleased that we were able to find a solution together,” he said, describing his time in Wolfsburg as marked by “many highs and lows.”
The Dane made 34 appearances for the club last season but was unable to prevent their relegation from the Bundesliga.
He first suffered cardiac arrest at Euro 2020, an incident that ended his Inter Milan career due to Italian rules on players with ICDs, before spells at Brentford and Manchester United followed.
Eriksen is now a free agent, with his playing future uncertain.
