Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations Minister Sam Nartey George has confirmed that the government has reached an agreement with the Telcos for changes in data prices and packages.
MTN will increase their data packages by 15%, which means they will bring back their GHC399 bundle, which would come with 214 GB instead of 92 GB.
Airtel Tigo will increase its data packages by 10%, as will Telecel.
In a press conference with the Telcos representatives, Sam George said, “The Minister cannot unilaterally order telcos to reduce data prices”.
“I’m committed to an engagement-led style of leadership, and the recovery of 8 years of mismanagement can’t be completed in four months. I am aware these increases are going to come at considerable cost.
“The regulator, the NCA, will ensure they monitor the strict implementation of this directive on the 1st of July. Where failure is applied, sanction is applied,” Sam George said.
The ministry expects the Telcos to follow the agreement and start serving Ghanaians with the new prices effective 1st July 2025. Whoever fails to comply with the laws of the land.
Ghanaians have expressed their delight in the announcement, with the minister promising further reduction.
