Asante Kotoko will commence their journey in African football for the 2025-26 season on Sunday afternoon when they welcome Nigerian side Kwara United at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The two-time winners of the CAF Champions League are determined to make it to the next stage of the competition, but must deal with Nigeria’s Kwara first.
Head coach Abdul Karim Zito knows all that it takes to succeed at this level after surprisingly reaching the semi-finals of the competition in the 2023-24season with Dreams FC, where they lost 3-0 on aggregate to the eventual winners Zamalek of Egypt.
The Porcupine Warriors family expects the legendary Zito to repeat that feat for them.
Asante Kotoko are buoyed by the 1-0 win they recorded at Berekum Chelsea at the Berekum Golden City Park. The club had an indifferent pre-season after finishing bottom of the GHALCA Top 4 and winning the Super Cup at Bibiani.
Kwara United, on the other hand, have not hit top form after winning just one game in their four league matches. They have drawn two and lost one, and occupy 12th position in Nigeria’s Premier League.
These statistics give Kumasi Asante Kotoko hope that they will travel to Nigeria with a win.
Kwara United and Kotoko both are in the Confederation Cup after winning their domestic cups.
Ghana and Nigeria will renew their football rivalry when Kotoko and Kwara square off at 3 pm on Sunday.
