Haruna Ishaq, a 38-year-old scrap dealer, has been arraigned before the Akyem Sweduru Court for allegedly defiling a 15-year-old girl student and infecting her with HIV
Haruna Ishaq, a resident of the Oda CMB area, was charged with abduction, defilement, and willful transmission of HIV after allegedly luring a first-year student of St. Francis Senior High School and engaging in sexual acts that led to her infection.
The incident reportedly occurred on April 26, 2025, and was brought to light by the victim’s mother, who trades in iced kenkey and sobolo at Oda New Lorry Park. The case has sparked outrage in the community, with many calling for swift justice.
During court proceedings presided over by Madam Akosua Ataa Nyarko, Ishaq pleaded not guilty to all charges.
He had previously been remanded twice into police custody, but his lawyers—Nana Asare-Djikunu and Richard Offin—successfully argued for bail on health grounds, citing his need for medical attention.
The court granted bail set at GH¢60,000 with three sureties to be justified, and the accused is expected to reappear on October 23, 2025, for trial.
The case has drawn attention to the dangers faced by vulnerable students and the need for stronger protective measures.
As the trial date approaches, advocacy groups and community leaders are urging authorities to ensure a thorough investigation and appropriate punishment if the accused is found guilty.
The outcome of this case could set a precedent for how such sensitive and serious offences are handled in Ghana’s judicial system.
