“I got arrested and sentenced to two months’ imprisonment at Kumasi Central Prison,” Akyaa said.
“At the Court, the judge asked me to compensate the complainant with a sum of Gh¢1,000 and pay a fine of Gh¢1,200, which I couldn’t pay,” she.
This is a sad account of Efya Akyaa, a mother of three who was imprisoned six years ago for stealing 5 cedis.
Akyaa, who lives in Adaesua (Bosomtwe) in the Ashanti Region, was sentenced to two months in prison.
She stated that her husband left her to work in Togo more than four years ago and has not come back.
Efya Akyaa worked as a food vendor for someone while the owner’s daughter was at school.
Efya stated to Crime Check TV Ghana that she received Gh¢5 for her work as a chopbar attendant and was also provided food for herself and her children.
She mentioned that she was feeling hungry and lacked money to purchase food, which led her to steal it.
The complainant confronted her, which resulted in a physical fight. During the encounter, she revealed that she had used a razor blade to cut the complainant’s hand.
Efya Akyaa has spent years in jail for failing to compensate the complainant Gh¢1,000 and pay a fine of Gh¢1,200 to the court.
