Galamsey is still prevalent in Ghana after numerous efforts from the government and chiefs to halt it.
On Saturday, 18th April, at Kunsu Gyaekontabuo in the Ahafo Ano South-West District in the Ashanti Region, the National Anti-illegal Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) arrested six Chinese nationals for engaging in unlawful mining.
The operation, per official report from NAIMOS, commenced at around 8:20 am after they gathered authentic information about foreigners engaging in galamsey in the village, leading to the arrest of one Chinese national at the site.
After interrogations, he directed the security officers to a residence near the galamsey site where five more Chinese were arrested.
Mining tools like hoses, excavators, washing platforms, and pumping machines, among many other tools for mining, were confiscated.
At the residence of the perpetrators, mobile phones, passports, a cash of GHC 60,000, a Toyota Tacoma vehicle, two pump-action guns and 102 rounds of ammunition were discovered.
The six Chinese nationals have been handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for further investigations.
