The host Germany was tested by Murat Yakin’s Switzerland led by the grand master Granit Xhaka who bossed the game from the onset to the end. The former Arsenal midfielder, now a Bundesliga champion with Bayer 04 Leverkusen has been extremely good for Switzerland in the ongoing Euro 2024 as he rubberstamped his importance to Yakin’s side with an impressive display against the host.

Remo Freuler’s assist was finished by Dan Ndoye in the 27th minute to help Switzerland take an impressive lead. Germany was always going to face a huge test when facing Switzerland. Naggelsman’s side massacred Scotland in the opening game of the tournament and won 2-0 against Hungary but the Swiss challenge was very different.

In the 84th minute, Switzerland thought they had finished the game with another goal via Vargas’ strike but he was slightly offside. The relief on the faces of the Germans was beautiful as they had every chance to avoid morale-killing defeat.

Substitute Niklas Fullkrug connected a pinpoint accurate cross from David Raum in the 92nd minute with a gorgeous header to level the scores 1-1.

A defeat would have been catastrophic as the Germans were going to doubt the team once again.

In the other game of the group, Scotland was narrowly pipped by Hungary with Kevin Csoboth scoring in the 100th minute. The goal means Scotland is out while Hungary awaits if they will progress depending on the results of many other games.

The Titan Army will feel very disappointed after failing to progress with talented players like McGinn, McTominay, Tierney, Robertson, Che Adams and Billy Gilmour in their squad.

The belief ahead of the tournament was huge but their perennial inability to progress from the group stage of any major tournament continued.
