A Kumasi-based Kwadaso Circuit Court has handed a one-month prison term to an unemployed Ghanaian called Ebenezer Frimpong over his bid to make away with a police armoured vehicle at Nkawie in the Ashanti Region’s Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality.
Frimpong, 26, hails from Antwi Agyeikrom in the Atwima Mponua District, was picked up on April 15, 2026, shortly after commandeering the vehicle.
He first denied the charge but reversed his position to admit guilt on July 21, after a mental health evaluation conducted at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital confirmed he was capable of standing trial.
This assessment, which had held up the case, was tendered before His Honour Jephthah Appau, who based the sentence on the admission.
The episode unfolded at roughly 10:00 a.m. on April 15, when Lance Corporal Joshua Denkyi, attached to the Formed Police Unit, pulled over the armoured vehicle near Nkawie Market to get medication, leaving the engine running as he stepped away.
Frimpong, who happened to be walking by, hopped behind the wheel and drove off at speed, catching onlookers and the officer off guard.
He was subsequently sighted heading along the Nkawie-Abuakwa-Kumasi route, and officers from the regional MTTD assisted in tracking him down at Mim, near Abuakwa, where he was taken into custody.
While in the dock, Frimpong knelt before the judge in tears, begging to be enlisted into the Ghana Police Service rather than face imprisonment.
Justice Appau noted that the lenient sentence reflected Frimpong’s age and his cooperation in not dragging out court proceedings once he switched his plea.
He had previously denied the charge on May 5, 2026, and had remained in custody on a provisional theft charge since his arrest.
