A 38-year-old man without a job has been given a six-year prison sentence by an Accra Circuit Court for stealing an Itel mobile phone worth GH¢350 from a resident in Nungua while threatening him with a machete.

The judge, Basilia Adjei-Tawiah, found Thomas Kwabena Vordzorgbe guilty of robbery after a complete trial, even though he claimed he was not guilty.

The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector John Gohoho, explained that the victim is a Nigerian man from Delta State who lives at Nungua Cocoa Beach.

Vordzorgbe lives in the Nungua Kingsway area. On November 11, 2022, around 10:00 p.m., the victim went to a well-known spot at Spintex to hang out with friends and left around 3:00 a.m. the next day.

Vordzorgbe noticed the complainant from afar and followed him to the station. There, he confronted the victim and demanded his belongings.

When the victim refused to comply, Vordzorgbe took out a machete and cut him on his left hand, injuring him. Hurt and unable to fight back, the victim gave up his Itel phone.

The victim reported what happened to the Nungua Police Station and received a medical form for treatment. Later that day, around 7:00 p.m., he learned that someone had seen Vordzorgbe at the Nungua Lorry Station trying to sell the stolen phone.

With some help, the complainant went there, recognised Vordzorgbe as his attacker, and helped arrest him.

When police searched Vordzorgbe, they found the stolen phone.

During questioning by police, he confessed to committing the robbery in his statement. The court then found him guilty and sentenced him to prison.
