A 26-year-old driver, Kofi Nti, alias Agoogo, has been sentenced to two years’ imprisonment by the Bekwai Circuit Court for stealing five sound amplifiers and a can of emulsion paint valued at GH¢3,300 at Adagya in the Ashanti Region.
Nti, a resident of Adagya, pleaded guilty to charges of unlawful entry and stealing and was convicted and sentenced by His Honour Isaac Apietu, with Detective Inspector Eric Okyere prosecuting the case.
According to the prosecution, Nti and the complainant, Sarkodie Eric, were neighbours. On August 14, 2026, at about 1:00 a.m., Nti set out from his home with the intention of scouting for a house to steal from, arriving at the complainant’s residence around 1:10 a.m.
Finding the exit door unlocked, he opened it and entered the veranda without permission, making off with five sound amplifiers valued at GH¢2,800 and a can of Top Coat emulsion paint valued at GH¢500, which he hid at his own residence.
The complainant discovered the theft around 7:30 a.m. and alerted his neighbours.
The following day, Nti sold four of the stolen amplifiers to a scrap dealer, Rashid Abdul Rahim, for just GH¢140. The complainant later traced his property to the scrap dealer and identified them.
Nti was arrested on August 17, 2026, after police found him hiding under a mattress during a search of his room; he reportedly attempted to escape and struggled with officers before being overpowered.
He subsequently led police to recover the fifth amplifier, hidden in the ceiling, and the paint, concealed elsewhere in the room, and demonstrated to officers how he had gained entry into the complainant’s home.
In his caution statement, Nti admitted the offences, explaining that he stole and sold the items to raise money for his pregnant wife’s medical bills.
The scrap dealer, initially detained to assist investigations, was later discharged.
