Police officers at the Nkwanta–Breweniase checkpoint on the Eastern Corridor in the Oti Region have seized a large shipment of ammunition and detained two individuals from a cargo truck related to the suspected illegal transport of these items.

A cargo truck with the registration number GW 9927–13, travelling from Accra-Tema Station to Damanko in the Nkwanta North District, was stopped by officers during a routine inspection. A search of the vehicle allegedly resulted in the finding of over 20,000 rounds of ammunition and a firearm made in another country.

The recovered items consist of 7,000 AA ammunition, 3,000 BB cartridges, and 1,124 rounds of AK-47 ammunition, among other items, resulting in a total of more than 20,000 rounds.

Kende Richard, 26, the driver of the vehicle, and his passenger, Latif Adam, 20, are currently in custody and are cooperating with the investigation. The Nkwanta South Police Command is assisting with the current investigation to determine the origin, intended destination, and potential network related to the shipment.

The interception occurs during increased security measures in the Nkwanta Municipality, where officials have stepped up monitoring due to worries about safety and ongoing conflicts in certain areas of the district.

Security officials state that the heightened alert is intended to stop the movement of weapons and ammunition that may contribute to tensions or criminal actions.
