Ghana forward Antoine Semenyo says he is “beating himself up” after missing key chances in Manchester City’s 4-2 defeat by Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League.

City suffered their first defeat in all competitions this season after falling three goals behind in the opening 35 minutes against the reigning European champions on Wednesday.

Manchester City mounted a second-half comeback, with Erling Haaland helping to spark the fightback, but they were unable to recover from their early collapse despite creating numerous opportunities.

City recorded 27 attempts on goal and an expected goals (xG) figure of 2.5, but their failure to make the most of their chances proved costly.

Semenyo was among those left frustrated by missed opportunities, including a significant opening shortly after Haaland’s initial strike. Scoring at that point could have reduced the deficit to 3-2 and given City fresh momentum.

Reflecting on the defeat, the Ghanaian forward admitted he was disappointed with his own contribution but praised the team’s response after falling behind.

“It’s quite frustrating, to be honest. I think I’m beating myself up a little bit at the moment from all the chances that I missed,” Semenyo said.

“But I think collectively it was just the reaction, and we did so well, caused so many problems. So just unfortunate not to score. So we just take the positives and go again.”

The forward also acknowledged the quality of PSG, highlighting the attacking talent in their squad and the challenge they posed throughout the contest.

“They’re one of the best, obviously … Ballon d’Or candidates all around in their team. They made it very hard for us today. We knew what to expect, very unorthodox, credit to them. That’s why they’re back-to-back European champions,” he added.

PSG could have increased their winning margin late on, but Ferran Torres missed a penalty that would have made the score 5-2.

For City, the defeat is an early setback after an otherwise strong start to the campaign. Their ability to create chances offered some encouragement, but their defensive struggles in the first half and wastefulness in front of goal left them with little room for error.

Semenyo will now look to put the missed opportunities behind him as City regroup and turn their attention to their next fixtures.
