The Round 16 of the 2023 AFCON has ended with South Africa beating Morocco by 2-0 through Evidence Makgopa and  Teboho Mokoena’s brace.

It is very shocking to learn that all the 5 teams that represented Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Qatar have all been eliminated. Morocco was the last as Ghana, Egypt, Tunisia and Cameroon are all not going to participate in the knockout stage.

The least-ranked teams have surprised everyone in the 2023 AFCON. South Africa’s win Over the much favourite Atlas Lions was a fantastic one as Hugo Broos never panicked playing against the semi-finals of the Qatar World Cup.

The first half ended 0-0 as none of the teams was able to break the deadlock. The second half got off to a decent side as Bafana Bafana struck first in the 57th minute.

Evidence Makgopa received a sumptuous pass from Themba Zwane who fired a low shot into the bottom corner with Bounou having no chance to stop it.

Morocco attacked for the rest of the second half but South Africa’s defence was resolute and impenetrable.

Sofyan Amrabat was shown a Straight red card after VAR was consulted just 5 minutes into the 10 extra minutes played. The resulting free kick was covert sumptuously by Tboho Mokoena.

It was quite shocking that the World Cup semi-finalists were beaten by Bafana Bafana.

None of the quarter-finalists in the 2021 AFCON was able to qualify for the quarter-finals of the ongoing AFCON in Ivory Coast.

Bafana Bafana will play against Cape Verde in the quarter-finals of the 2023 AFCON.
