The upcoming Ghana Premier League (GPL) season faces significant challenges due to the absence of a title sponsor, with Bernard Nana Yaw Amofa Jantuah, bankroller of Berekum Chelsea, urging government intervention.

The abrupt termination of Betpawa’s three-year sponsorship deal, just over a year into the contract, has left the Ghana Football Association (GFA) scrambling for financial support.

This lack of sponsorship has created severe financial difficulties for the league and its clubs.

Jantuah voiced his concerns during an interview with Kessben FM, stressing the urgent need for government assistance to secure a new sponsor.

“There is no sponsorship for the Ghana Premier League… The cost involved in running a club isn’t easy, so I will plead with the government to help the FA secure sponsorship to relieve clubs from their burden,” he said.

He further highlighted the financial strain on clubs due to insufficient prize money, noting, “It’s very difficult to run football in Ghana.

The league cannot boast of $200,000 for a season… The winner of our league takes home GHC500,000, so if you are unable to sell some players, you will run at a loss. We are indeed struggling.”

As Berekum Chelsea prepares for the new season, hoping to clinch their second league title, the financial uncertainty surrounding the GPL remains a major concern for all stakeholders involved.
