Former Black Stars head coach Chris Houghton was spotted on Thursday morning on a flight from London to Dublin sparking hopes he will conclude a deal to be the next head coach of the Boys in Green.
Christopher Wiĺliam Gerard Houghton, 65, was born and bred in Essex, England, to an Irish mother and a Ghanaian father. The former full-back represented the Republic of Ireland 53 times between 1979 to 1991. He was eligible to play for England and Ghana as well but opted to be a Boy in Green.
The Republic of Ireland has never been to any major tournament since the 2016 European championship won by Portugal in France.
The Republic of Ireland is seeking a new direction after finishing 4th only ahead of lowly Gibraltar in Group B of the qualifiers for the imminent Euro 2024 to be played in Germany.
Kenny Stephen mutually parted ways with the Republic of Ireland after failing to qualify for the 2024 Euros. Former Manchester United player John O’Shea in the recent international break coached the Boys in Green in their friendly games in Dublin at the Aviva Stadium against Belgium and Switzerland.
The head coach position
is vacant and the former head coach of Ghana, Chris Houghton is the leading candidate to take charge of the team.
It is rumoured that the 65-year-old is keen to turn things around for his motherland which has been in immense pain since the 2016 European Championship.
Chris Houghton has immense experience in coaching as he has coached Brighton and Hove Albion, Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest in England. His recent job ended in disaster in the 2023 AFCON with Ghana.
