The Pharaohs of Egypt will consider the 2023 AFCON as one of their worst-ever tournaments after failing to win a single game in four matches.
Egypt drew all three group games and continued their indifferent performance against DR Congo with a 1-1 draw in 120 minutes.
The first 35 minutes were a ding-dong affair as both sides had their moment to dominate for a while.
The deadlock was broken in the 37th minute with Elia Meshack getting to a rebound inside the six-yard box and headed a beautiful cross from Yoane Wissa to give DR Congo a deserving lead.
A penalty was awarded to Egypt on the stroke of halftime after VAR confirmed that Dylan Batubinsika had elbowed Ahmed Hegazy in the 18-yard box.
Mostapha Mohamed calmly converted the penalty to level the score for the Pharaohs of Egypt.
The first half ended 1-1 with both teams satisfied with the results. No goal was scored in the second half hence the game travelled to an extra time.
The 1-1 draw means Egypt has drawn the last 8 AFCON games after full-time.
Seven minutes into the extra time, Mohamed Hamdi was shown a second yellow card after a horrible challenge to his opponent. DR Congo had a man’s advantage but couldn’t find the winner.
The game went to penalties with Mostapha Mohamed and Gabaski missing theirs in the 9 penalties taken by Egypt.
Arthur Masuaku only missed for the Leopards. DR Congo won 8-7 on penalties to advance to the quarter-finals.
DR Congo will play against Guinea who earlier beat Guinea 1-0.
