Ghanaian geography professor, Elizabeth Ardayfio-Schandorf has started her role as the new chairperson of the Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC), making her the first woman to lead Ghana’s oil industry oversight body.

PIAC was established under the Petroleum Revenue Management Act to provide independent monitoring of oil and gas revenues and their use.

As chairperson, Emerita Professor Ardayfio-Schandorf will oversee the committee’s work in scrutinizing revenue collection, management and expenditure in Ghana’s strategically important petroleum sector.

The renowned Geography lecturer at the University of Ghana takes over the role from outgoing chair Kwame Adom Frimpong, whose one-year term has ended.

With expertise in areas such as environmental management, land use and extractive industry policy, Ardayfio-Schandorf is seen as well-qualified to take on the important governance role, noted the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation in a statement released on January 18.

She will aim to build on PIAC’s achievements since its establishment in September 2011, through publications that evaluate revenue collection and allocation in the oil and gas sector.
