The Environmental Protection Authority, EPA, has ordered the shutdown of Empire Cement Ghana Limited at Weija in the Greater Accra Region over alleged breaches of its environmental permit and air pollution regulations.
The directive follows several public complaints about air pollution and nuisance linked to the company’s operations.
The EPA says its investigations found sustained emissions of visible particulate matter, gases and other pollutants from the factory, with potential implications for the environment, adjoining communities and public health.
The Authority also found that the company had failed to submit its quarterly environmental monitoring returns and had not properly implemented or maintained required pollution control systems.
The EPA has ordered Empire Cement to submit its outstanding environmental monitoring returns by October 1, 2026, and install appropriate air pollution control systems that comply with the Ghana Standard for Environment and Health Protection.
The company has also been directed to ensure its existing pollution control systems and dust plants are properly maintained before it can resume operations.
